The acquisition of the La Puerta site came with a unique design opportunity, an abandoned steel railroad trestle. Plans were made to use the trestle as a means to expand the city trail system, extending the trail to the north side of the Purgatoire River. The trestle was transformed with a new wooden walking surface and metal patinaed panels The design pays homage to its original structure while minimizing the need for ongoing maintenance. Additions such as planters, seating, and sunshades have been added enticing visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the city, the flowing river, and the majestic silhouette of Fishers Peak.
